Volcanic eruption in Barren Island
The first eruption recorded in the Barren Island dates way back to the year 1787. After that, the volcano has erupted for more than 10 times with 1991 being the most severe of all. The volcanic eruption in the year 1991 lasted for around 6 months and is believed as a cause of the reduction in the flora and fauna across the islands. In the year 1993 people from the Geological Survey of India visited the islands and inspected the destruction caused by the eruptions. The team came to the conclusion that out of the 16 Bird Species, only 6 were found to exist and the most affected species was Pied Imperial Pigeon. In the year 2017, the volcano became active again and the presence of bright red lava in Barren Island could be observed in the evenings.
